Card Design: Pattie's Creations Challenge #120... GREEN is the Color and anything with Green goes!

Ummm....oops.  I was sure I had scheduled this post but I guess I didn't.  The sad thing is that it was ready to go on time.  Unfortunately, I've only been out of bed for a couple hours in the last 48 so I didn't get a chance to check and make sure my Friday posts went out.  Apologies to Pattie and the gang for the lateness in getting my post published.

You can enter twice per challenge and of course MUST follow all the challenge requirements that are posted for each challenge. Easy Peasy right!

Pop over to the challenge blog and check out what my fabulous teammates have offered up for inspiration.  Oh and don't forget...Pattie offers up a new freebie the first Friday of the month and it will remain up for approximately two weeks; so, be sure to pop over and check it out as well!

Card Design: Digi Darla's Challenges #60--Let's Celebrate and Some Special Freebies

Welcome to my second post this wonderful Monday morning!  Hope you have all had a marvelous weekend.  Time for this week's challenge over at the dynamic Digi Darla's Challenges Blog. This week for Challenge #60 the theme is "Let's Celebrate".  It is time to show us your projects that cover any type of celebration, i.e. birthday, graduation, or the event that I am focussing on today, anniversary.

Now it just so happens that today's celebration challenge actually falls on our 24th wedding anniversary so it is fitting that I showcase the card I created for my husbandOn April 29th, 1989, at 2:30 pm I married my soul mate.  We have most definitely had our ups and downs.  Unfortunately, a lot of downs BUT we have stuck through it thick and thin only to emerge stronger out the other side.  I'd be nothing without this man by my side.

If you are reading this hubby, I'd recommend that if you would like your card to be a surprise, you might want to avoid reading any further and just come back to this post sometime tomorrow.

Don't forget one person will be the lucky winner of FIVE Digi Darla (DD) images!  AND any entries using a DD image get entered into a SECOND drawing for THREE images. So, you could technically win eight images! Imagine the fun you could have with all those digis!  If you do use one of Kim's fabulous images make sure you write DD after your name.

I've used the following digis:
Here is the front of my card...

Here is the inside...

Here are the card details, I hope I haven't forgotten anything...

General Information:
  • Our wedding colours were peach and ivory so I though it fitting to use all the peachy coloured paper.
  • I have used this sketch from Tuesday Morning Sketches.
  Digital Image:
  • Valentine Bears (front):  The image on the front of the card is Digi Darla's Valentine BearsIt was coloured using Copic markers.  Bears:   E31, E33, E37, E39 (fur); R22 (ears); BG10, BG15, BG18 (bow).  Flowers:  Y11, Y13, Y15, Y17 (petals and stamen); YG61, YG63, YG67 (leaves).  Balloons:  YR000, YR00, YR02 YR04, YR07.  Clouds:  Colourless blender, N0, C1, C3.  The image was then fussy cut and adhered to the front.
  • Now aren't those two of the cutest little bears you've ever seen?!  That's me there on the left and hubby on the right.  Now we're both quite a bit lighter in skin tone but the roundness definitely fits me.  The boy bear should have been slimmer though, but all in all, a pretty good representation of the two of us.  Kim has certainly captured the love in our expressions!
  • The balloons were fussy cut and then I added charcoal cross stitch thread to act as balloon strings.  I duplicated the right balloon, coloured it up and used a 1/8th inch 3D adhesive dot to give it added dimension.
  • Clouds (front):  I came up with an ingenious idea for the two additional clouds I used.  I wanted them to have the same basic shape as the cloud "we're" sitting on.  So, you know how you can make conversation bubbles in a lot of graphics programs?  Well, in Microsoft Publisher I used this feature.  I made them the length and flatness I wanted and then created a white square to cover up the little circles that emanated from them so they'd look like clouds.  Then I fussy cut the shapes, coloured them up with the same colours I used on the main cloud and adhered them with three dimensional adhesive tabs to pop them up a bit.
Digital Sentiments:
  • 'I Love Yousentiment (inside)The first part of the sentiment on the inside of the card is a combination of two different Digi Darla images.  The first and third 'I Love You' solid word art can be found HERE, and the middle open word art can be found in the store HERE.
  • The rest of the sentence, "Three words I will never get tired of saying!" is one I created and is available as a freebie below in honour of this special occasion.  I've also included the sentiment from inside the card I created for the San's design blog hop and a couple other treats too.
Paper Products:
  • Card base: Michael's Recollection's Cardstock, white.
  • Designer Papers:  The cloud paper comes from the Recollection's All Seasons paper pad.  The rest of the DP paper comes from Recollection's Bright and Basic paper pad.
Challenges I hope to enter include:
Some more challenges may be added to this list later this week and/or month.

So, why not come and show us what you've got by entering in our current challenge this week over at Digi Darla's Challenges?  While you are there please check out the wonderful creations from the rest of the design teamWe always look forward to seeing the delightful creations you come up with.

Now for the reason the other 300 of you are here...

Six freebie love related sentiments in honour of this special day:

Please see below for font information, download instructions and usage summary.  Remember that I would love to see anything you create using one of my images.

Well that is it for this post.  Have a wonderful day everyone!

Thank you so much for stopping by.  As I've now added to my comment section, whether you are a regular, here for the first time or popping over in your official capacity as a DT member, please know how much I appreciate the words that you leave behind.  Your encouragement helps me to become a better designer.   I try my best to reply to your comments (when an email address is available) but that is getting more and more difficult as my plate fills up with new responsibilities, new roles, and new obligations.  If I don't get the opportunity to thank you personally, know that I don't take a single comment for granted. Thank you for your understanding.

Until next time,

Sunday Spotlight: January 20, 2013

It is another Sunday already.  Therefore it is time for the next edition of the Sunday Spotlight.  If you are just visiting for the first time, it is that time of week when I say a particular thank you to one of my readers acknowledging them for something thoughtful, inspiring, or mindful that they have said in one of their comments.  As a way of saying thanks, I will present this person with an advanced copy of a freebie that I promise, no one else will be able to get their hand on for at least three months and possibly longer.

So without further ado, the comment I'm highlighting and reflecting on this week belongs to...

MANDY

who said:
Lisa you have actually made me cry (happy tears of course). I love to interact with like minded people who share the happy and the sad times, as they happen to all of us. The important things is to learn from the sad times and appreciate the happy times. In my blog in the past I have shared some of the darkest times when I was in deep dark depression but I am now very nearly almost all the way out the other side. 2 Years ago I could not possibly think this would happen, I am so much more happy and positive, unburdened and free, I want to spread this happiness to everyone around me and if a few comments on a post can bring this much joy to both you and me, that's a nice way to touch someone else's life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for spotlighting me, it means a lot to me. Thank you also for the special freebie, that really is a lovely thing to do. Love Mandy xxx on Sunday Spotlight: January 13, 2013

Mandy is responding to the fact that her quote was highlighted in last week's mass spotlightHERE is the link if you missed it--you might want to check it out.  Your name could be listed there.  There are still six people who haven't contacted me to make arrangements for their free digi.

I chose this comment for a couple of reasons.

First of all, Mandy is so brave to share with the world her pain and difficulties of dealing with depression; not only with sharing herself on her blog but also having the strength to share with others through comments she has left elsewhere.  Unfortunately, there is still such a stigma attached to depression.  Some people just aren't equipped to deal with it.  I've eluded here on this blog to the dark days I experienced when I first became disabled.  There is always the fear of rejection when we share these kinds of stories with others.  If my own friends walked away from me and never came back how could I ever expect total strangers to stick around?  However, the fact is that you do.  Mandy, I and so many others share not only the good but sometimes the bad too and you guys stick around to support us.  Maybe the reasoning is similar to what Mandy suggests when she states that the good and the bad happen to everyone.  Maybe people are able to see certain aspects of themselves or their lives when they read about ours and are able to identify with us on our own personal journeys.  Whatever the reason, you have no idea what that means to me and I'm sure to Mandy and the rest as well.  So, thank you Mandy for being brave enough to share your story, and inspiring the rest of us to share ours.  Know you that you will always have a safe haven here on my blog or with me in private.

Secondly, I identify with this message because of what Mandy said in her last line which bears repeating:

I want to spread this happiness to everyone around me and if a few comments on a post can bring this much joy to both you and me, that's a nice way to touch someone else's life.
Comments are so important to me.  Not only in the receiving but also in the giving. Sure they take time to leave, but if you know that by spending a few moments at the keyboard you can possibly brighten someone else's day, then that is time well spent.  Well, it certainly is to me anyways.   I ALWAYS read every single comment left and do my best effort to reply when an address is available.  Depending on the comment, I may even go in search of the person's blog so that they can know just how much their words meant to me.  From the receiving end of things, always know that your comments truly do have an impact on the way that I think and the way that I feel.  They inspire me to contemplate, to design, to create, to motivate and to dream.  They inspire me to be the best person I can possibly be in this blogiverse of ours.

Honourable mentions include:
  • Hi Lisa! I've been meaning to make a card for the Great Impressions challenges all week, but just haven't gotten there yet.....good intentions, you know? Your card is so cute. It reminds me of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood (a show from when I was little) where the cat would talk...."Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meoew", and then they would say....."what she said was, "______________". So, this reminded me of that. Super cute! Thanks for sharing this with us in our challenge. I'm SO SUPER HAPPY to have you as a regular participant, and SO grateful for your upbeat personality. Have a great day blessed of the Lord, and come back soon. Karen Word Art Wednesday on Time for a Thank You Card

  • That is super motivational and so true... I have found in the past and still at times get caught in it..now once I am in that place I open my mind to look at the situation for what it is , what I am creating myself along with the situation then I focus on that thread you mentioned and amazingly I can always look back and see how it magically dissolved, just by being aware! We certainly will always have some hope or a positive thread to hand onto. Great post and I hope you are feeling better sweetie... I am praying for you Lots of hugs Naomi on Motivational Monday: Turn Your Face to the Sun
  • This is wonderful Lisa. Love the colours in the image and the sentiment is just perfect. I do hope that your health improves soon and that your motivation comes back to you. Keep looking to the positive - its what I have been learning to do since following your blog back in October. Suze on Motivational Monday: Turn Your Face to the Sun
  • ohhhh you are sooo sweet! One of the things that I love the most about blogging is the way that even if we don't know each other outside of the web we have a community of people sharing common interests. And your blog really helps to achieve this by letting us meet in a wonderful place ;) And of course you also make us think... with your words of wisdom. Keep it up my friend you are doing a fabulous job. Thank you so much for the advance copy of a freebie ;) That's really awesome. Vicky on Sunday Spotlight: January 13, 2013

As usual there were so many wonderful comments this week to choose from.  In general I also want to say thanks to those of you who...
  • expressed concern and/or well wishes for my quick recovery.  While I again battled another migraine on Friday I am feeling better now.
  • left comments on all the cards I have published this week letting me know the specific elements you liked.   It allows me to think about incorporating similar elements into future designs.  If there is something you don't like, I want to know about that too. This way I don't repeat unattractive qualities.  Don't forget, constructive criticism helps us grow.
  • actually took the time to read my posts and not just grab a freebie or check out the card and run.

Please know how truly difficult it is each and every week for me to choose comments to highlight.  I appreciate the time and energy you put into visiting my blog and leaving me a note to reflect on throughout the week.

Until next time,

Saturday Showcase: April 13, 2013

It is time for the Saturday Showcase where I highlight other artists' work (whether it be stamps, cards or otherwise), a blog post offering a great technique, or I might even just pick a whole blog to showcase. If you are new to my blog you can find out why I created the showcase HERE.

This week I'm sharing tips on how to create a really neat project with you all, courtesy of this week's showcase pick.

My top pick for this week is a...

Unique Project
This cool project was created by
LISA MINCKLER
Her blog is called

I have a real treat for you this week courtesy of Lisa Minkler.  Just make sure you don't try to eat it.

Currently, Lisa is in the midst of creating these unique treats as part of a fundraising project for an organization called Cupcake Camp.  According to the information I received from Lisa, Cupcake Camp originated in San Francisco and has been a way for people to gather together in support of their chosen cause, eat cupcakes and raise money for charity.  Each camp deems their own fundraiser and it just so happens that Cupcake Camp Kansas City, Kansas, USA, has chosen to spread awareness for childhood cancer.  Local bakeries comes together and have bake offs, there are cupcake testings, face painting, tons of activities for kids and even a professional motor cycle team, Rides For Kids--who help raise money for The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation--will be there performing as well.

Cupcake Camp KC has chosen to bring attention to and raise funds for Childhood Cancer Awareness for the following reasons:
  • Because childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer among children under age 15--more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes and pediatric aids combined.
  • The National Cancer Institutes budget was $5 billion...of that $625 million went to breast cancer research, $296 million went to lung cancer research and only $197 million went to pediatrics cancer research only 4% of all cancer research was dedicated to childhood cancer.
  • Because childhood cancer affects children differently than adults.

This is a 100% Volunteer operation and all the proceeds from the event will go to benefit The University of Kansas, Cancer Center's Pediatric Research as well as The Kansas University Kids Healing Place.

If any of you are located in or near Kansas City and would be interested in attending this fundraiser, the event is taking place at The Johnson County Community College and the link above directs you to the events taking place, the entry price, the local bakeries participating and all the fun events for kids and adults alike to take part in.

Lisa was asked by the Director of Cupcake Camp, Samantha Ekwuru, if she would be interested in providing a booth that offered up crafty elements that focused on a cupcake theme and she jumped at the opportunity.  Lisa's mother is the Program Director of Heath and Human Services at the college and of course being one of Lisa's biggest supporters, she put a bug in Samantha's ear about Lisa. After Samantha saw Lisa's blog, she asked her to be part of this wonderful event and of course Lisa was thrilled.  The only downside to Lisa's offerings is that people won't be able to eat any of her goodies!! However, don't fear all you sweet tooths in the area, there will be PLENTY of sweet treats surrounding her.

The Cupcake Camp link above takes you to the website that gives all the events, prices, times, donation button, etc.  The date for this wonderful fundraising event is set for April 28th from 2-5 pm.  So, if you do live in the vicinity, I know that Lisa would love to meet you.

Now for those of you who can't make it to purchase one of these incredible goodies for yourself, Lisa has graciously allowed me to share the "ingredients' and "baking instructions" with all you wonderful readers for how to create these delicious looking centrepieces.
Lisa used spray foam--you know, the kind you spray into the gaps and cracks around the house--into the cupcake holders just like you would if you were making the real deal. Using a wooden stick,  she leveled out the tops before they dried completely.

Apparently, Lisa's attempts to aid in the levelling went a bit wonky (actually willy nilly was the term she used) because the foam sort of did its own thing anyways.  She painted them with acrylic paints to look like variations of cupcake recipes.

At this stage, right before the icing, is the time when you have to make your decorative items. Lisa rolled Sculpey clay out to look like little cherries and then used the leaf cutter from a fondant cake baking kit as well to make accompanying leaves. She then added little wire stems with a curly Q into the top of them.

Bake them  at 270 degrees for 20 minutes, let them cool, paint them with acrylics and then apply clear coat for shine...they're ready when the icing is.

Now if you want to learn how to make the icing and how to finish these cupcakes up, you are just going to have to go over to Lisa's blog and find out for yourself.  You'll find these instructions in the post, "Fake Baked Cupcakes".  Here is what they look like all decorated and on their own fancy plate.

Are these not some of the neatest things you have ever seen?  If I was closer to where Lisa lives, I know I'd be ordering a few. I hope that you have the time in your schedule to go over and say hi to her and congratulate her on an incredible concept for raising funds for a very worthwhile charity.  I wish her the absolute best in her attempts to sell these scrumptious looking centrepieces at the charity event on April 28th.

Oh and if you do go over today, take a moment to wish her a Happy Anniversary as her and her husband got married on this day some years ago.  Both of us were married in April.  Just one more thing Lisa and I have in common beside our first names and love of crafting!

Now, before you go there is some unfinished business from last week to take care of.  Last Saturday, Melin from My Papercrafting.com, generously offered up two free digis for one lucky person.  It is unfortunate that only five people participated in this draw, but that certainly made better odds for the lucky winner who turned out to be:
MANDY
All names were placed on pieces of paper, put into a pencil case, shaken up several times and then, a name was pulled.  Congratulations Mandy.  Please contact me to learn how to claim your prize!

I hope that you have enjoyed your visit and will take some time to go see the artist listed above.  Lisa works very hard to provide us with images for inspiration and our viewing pleasure so it is important that we don't take her for granted.  I am so grateful that Lisa allowed me to share her "recipe" with all of you along with the charity information on this fabulous fundraising organization.

The next Saturday Showcase will take place on May 4th, 2013.  If you have been reading my posts regularly, you will know that this is an extremely busy month for me.  With a birthday coming up at the end of this week, my husband's on the 22nd and our wedding anniversary on the 29th, I need to take some time and spend it with the dear man who puts up with me and all the hours I spend with you guys.  It's only fair I throw him a few extra hours, as we celebrate these special occasions.  Additionally, my parents are coming up on Monday for a couple days and I haven't seen them since Christmas, so I'll definitely be spending some time with them too.  So, I will be taking some time off from approximately April 18th to May 2nd.  I will still be around though, I have DT obligations to fulfill and other stuff that needs taking care off.  I'm just going to be taking some time off from some of my regular posts.  If you need to reach me, just send me an email.

Until next time,

Note:   *Thanks to Nikki from Limited Runs Stamps for creating my Saturday Showcase badge.
